A man in his 80s has died after an attack at the Mercy University Hospital in the early hours of this morning
Gardaí were alerted to the incident involving two patients shortly after 5.30 this morning.
A man in his 30's was arrested at the scene and is being questioned at the Bridewell Garda Station
The man who died is understood to have been 89 years old and from mid Cork and it's understood he didn't know the other patient
In a statement to RedFM News Gardaí confirmed that they were alerted to the incident involving two male patients in the hospital shortly after 5:30this morning.
A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene by investigating Gardaí and taken to the Bridewell Garda Station for questioning where he is currently being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act,
The scene is currently preserved for forensic and technical examination.
An incident room has been established at the Bridewell Garda Station and the services of the State Pathologist have been requested.
A Garda Family Liason Officer has been appointed and the family of the deceased have been notified.
Investigating Gardaí are not currently seeking anyone else in relation to this incident.
Management at the Mercy University Hospital say they are providing counselling services to patients and staff affected by the incident.
