Urgent calls have been made for the allocation of more gardai to Cork's roads policing unit
Labour Councillor Peter Horgan is seeking the deployment of gardai and the installation of signage, warning of crashes along the South Link Road, the N40 and the N25
He says the increase in crashes along these routes is leading to severe backlogs and steps need to be taken to force better driver behaviour in order to prevent further collisions
Speaking to RedFM News Councillor Horgan says more gardai need to be deployed during rush hour traffic
"The gardai in Cork are doing the very best they can, but they're doing it with one hand tied behind their back. The Garda Commissioner must allocate additional gardai to Cork and specifically to a road policing unit. It may be a situation where we need gardai literally on the South Link Road slowing people down. If you have gardai physically there present observing bad driver behaviour, fining motorists and issuing penalty point that is a consequence"
