Victims of domestic violence are now having to choose between homelessness and a place that is no longer safe to live.

West Cork Beacon says stronger legislation around domestic violence is needed to ensure the safety of women and children.

3,255 cases of domestic violence were reported to Gardaí in Cork City last year while 2,409 cases were reported in the county.

Speaking to RedFM News, Marie Mulholland of West Cork Beacon says Government needs to step up to ensure domestic violence victoms have a safe place to live,

"In a housing crisis that we have now in this country and a homelessness crisis, it's all very well put money into refuges, but where are they going to go after that?So we don't want to become

warehouses for women and children, because if there's nowhere to move on to, because there is no housing, then what's the next step? And government really needs to step up to the mark in

terms of how to keep women and children safe".
