Met Éireann has confirmed the current weather warning will be upgraded for most of the country this morning as the cold snap continues.

It will move from yellow to orange meaning the weather will be dangerous and could pose a threat to life and property.

Temperatures are expected to dip as low as -8 tonight.

Black ice has been reported across Cork with both city and county councils gritting roads as well as appealing to people to avoid unnecessary journeys.

Some schools which closed yesterday will delay opening today.

Power has been restored to all homes and businesses in Cork but ESB is still working to re-connect 10 thousand across Munster.

Forecaster with Met Éireann Rebecca Cantwell says the cold weather will last until the end of the week at least:

"The Status Yellow snow ice warning is going to expire by midday today, and then we have a Status Yellow, low temperature and ice warning that's out for the whole country until midnight on Thursday. It's likely if those warnings are they will be upgraded this this morning to an oOrange level low temperature and ice warning for much of the country, as we are going to see very cold temperatures during the day, and extremely cold temperatures, than at night."
