A pub owner in Youghal says the spike in closures across Cork over the last 5 years is no surprise.

72 pub owners closed their doors across the county between 2019 and 2023 according to new figures from the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland.

The group is calling on the Government for a reduction in the excise duty on alcohol to help reduce the number of closures.

Speaking to RedFM News, Michael Farrell of “Farrell’s Bar Summerfield Youghal” predicts the situation will get worse over the next 5 years as staff wages increase:

"I'm not surprised, it's what we know already. The pub industry is under severe pressure at the moment, and unfortunately the Governement are doing everything they can to exasperate the problem with the new legislation they're proposing is going to have dire consequences on the trade and it will be a lot worse in the next 4 or 5 years unfortunately."
