Cork's Noel O'Donovan Fine Gael councillor has been nominated to the Seanad by Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
He was first elected to the council in 2011, and then left politics in 2017 to join An Garda Síochana.
Mr O' Donovan ran again successfully in the local elections in 2024.
