Roughly 200,000 home and business owners could apply for a new three month freeze on mortgage repayments, according to the Irish Mortgage Holders Organisation.
The measure for those financially impacted by the coronavirus outbreak was announced yesterday after a meeting between banks and the Finance Minister.
Bankers will now meet Central Bank officials later, where they're expected to ask for rules on mortgage lending to be relaxed.
David Hall, of the Irish Mortgage Holders Organisation, says getting the payment break could be challenging for some mortgage holders.
He says thousands have been left in a very difficult financial situation.
