A Petition To Classify Gyms And Fitness Centres As 'Essential Services' Has Reached Over 27,000 Signatures

New restrictions are expected to be announced tonight

Calls have been made for them to remain open due to concerns that a potential second lockdown would impact many people both physically and mentally.

Those behind the petition say the the opportunity to exercise can be an outlet for stress, anxiety and depression.

Here Leeside gym operators say they've been inundated with queries from their clients about the potential closure with many expressing concern for their mental health.

Speaking to RedFM News Manager of Believe 2 Achieve in Frankfield Kevin Murphy says as well as an outlet for exercise many of their clients relied the gym post-lockdown as a way to cope with the ongoing stress of the pandemic:
