AIB under fire for charging quarterly fees as some customers receive COVID19 unemployment payment

AIB have come under fire for applying quarterly charges to customers who have lost their jobs in the wake of the COVID19 outbreak.

Thousands received their first COVID19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment of €350 yesterday and at the same time saw fees deducted from their accounts by the bank.

Calls have been made for the refund of the charges and the cancellation of the fees during for the period of the COVID19 crisis.

In a statement issued to RedFM News AIB says these fees were for the November to February period and banking is free of maintenance for student, graduate, advantage and basic bank accounts as well as some mortgage customers.

The bank also says customers can avoid these fees by maintaining a balance of €2,500 in their account.

However speaking to RedFM News Cork TDs Thomas Gould and Donnchadh O'Laoighre say this isn't good enough and all banks should suspend charges for customers affecting by COVID19:
