A Cork publican says businesses are struggling with the 8pm closing time.

Paul Montgomery has said 70 - 80% of his trade as been decimated due to the ongoing public health restrictions.

The publican who runs four city businesses has had to close Atlas on Marlboro St, and Kings on Princes Street while trade continues at Clancy’s and Conway’s Yard.

Staff shortages are also adding to the challenges faced by Cork businesses.

Speaking to RedFM news Paul Montgomery described the impact of the restrictions on his businesses in the city.

"We've seen it particularly in the last three or four days, maybe since the start of last week the bank holiday Tuesday, we've literally been halved again from what it was, even when it went from 12 back to 8.

"While we carried through Christmas pretty well as people were out, there are very few people out at the moment and trade is a fraction of what it was at Christmas time.

"If we weren't getting supports we would be definitely closed, it's very marginal even now if it's worth opening up, apart from a good Saturday night."
