Calls for the introduction of supports for aviation workers are intensifying following the latest blow to the sector.
It's after Aer Lingus told almost 200 ground staff and cabin crews based at Cork Airport that they will be laid off without pay for three months from September.
The airline has blamed the move on a loss of over €460 million since the start of last year
Trade unions SIPTU and Fórsa are calling on Aer Lingus to keep their employees on the payroll and want the government to to extend wage supports beyond the end of June.
Speaking to RedFM News, SIPTU Aviation Organiser Tony Carroll says the matter will be discussed in the coming days.
"There is a role for the government to give certainty to aviation workers who have suffered financial heartache for the last year and to give support.
"There is a specific support that we've been calling for for the bones of 12 months now for aviation workers, and I gather that's going to be discussed with government now this week."
