Proponents of a Cork-only currency say it could help revitalise the economy when lockdown ends.
The Irish Examiner reports Green Party Councillor Colette Finn has asked City Hall to consider the introduction of a local currency to encourage people to shop in the city.
However the plan could have already hit a stumbling block due to the length of time it takes to establish and govern such a currency.
City Hall say it took around three years to introduce a similar plans elsewhere.
