A Cork parent of a child with special needs is calling for teachers to receive the Covid 19 vaccine as a priority.

The comments by Siobhan Bridgeman come as the Government was forced to abandon a plan for children with special needs to return to the classroom tomorrow

The Department of Education says the decision was down to "a lack of co-operation" from teacher unions.

However the INTO and Forsa say their members were gravely concerned about the proposed return to the classroom.

Further engagement between the Department and unions is expected over the coming days to try reach an agreement.

Siobhan Bridgeman's son Rory is a student at St Gabriel's Special School in Bishopstown...

She told RedFM News that all school staff should be vaccinated as a priority to ensure a safe return for students.

"Obviously I'm upset. I wanted my son to have a routine again, and from the department side of things they didn't organise things properly.

"This should have been put into plan before now, there should have been a Plan B all along.

"My son is engaging a little bit on Zoom with his teacher, but half an hour isn't enough every day."
