Thousands of children are returning to school after a change to contact tracing rules.
The Chief Medical Officer says from today contact tracing of close contacts in primary schools and creches won't be needed.
Children aged 12 or under who are close contacts and are asymptomatic won't have to restrict their movements.
Sinn Fein's Education spokesperson, Cork's Donnchadh O'Laoghaire says it needs to be monitored closely.
"I suppose what we need to know is how this is going to work on the ground, schools in particular are going to be anxious to know how this is going to work on the ground.
"What I think we also need is to ensure that there are adequate mitigation measures, if there's not going to be contract tracing we need to ensure that mitigation measures are there in schools to make them as safe as possible."
