The Chief Medical Officer admits that closing pubs and clubs at midnight won't have a significant impact on its own.

NPHET will meet again on Thursday, but says it will be too soon to assess whether recently introduced measures have worked.

4,181 Covid cases were confirmed here yesterday, while 682 people were in public hospitals last night - the highest since February 21st.

Dr Tony Holohan says closing hospitality at midnight sends an important message to the public.

"Well I think it's an important signal.

"Government did more than just that, they also mandated for people to work from home unless absolutely necessary, and the signal of that comes from all of these things.

"This is now a serious situation which is having a serious impact on public health which is most important, and the secondary impact in terms of our healthcare system - particularly on hospitals."
