The Chief Medical Officer says the pattern of Covid-19 is still trending upwards, despite a drop in the number of daily cases.

264 new infections were recorded yesterday, along with two further deaths.

The estimated national 14-day incidence of the virus in a number of counties is continuing to rise.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan says the five-day moving average is still going up:

"Even though the number 264 is lower than the five day average, the five day average has increased slightly and is now at 312.

"we're in an increasing situation now, and we don't believe this figure of 264 changes the message of yesterday.

"We think we're beginning to see a change in the pattern of transmission in the virus, and an increase in the number of cases overall in our five day average."
