Ireland is moving further away from using cash, with a record number of contactless payments made in June of this year.

The latest figures show there were 2,400,000 contactless payments made every day in June this year - a three-fold increase in three years.

Brian Hayes of the Banking and Payments Federation says it's a sign Ireland's economy is really bouncing back.

"People are out there clearly shopping again. Hospitality, transport and other key industries that were under lockdown are coming back strongly.

"It's also showing that consumers are voting with their fingertips and are voting with digital payments. They're using less cash - the post covid economy is essentially a contactless transaction economy.

"The pace in the increase of the contactless payment numbers is really quite astonishing."
