The Cork based Cope Foundation have launched a fundraising campaign to help their residents stay in contact with family and friends during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The charity which supports over 2,500 children and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism is looking to raise €20,000 to purchase smart phones and tablets to help their residents cope with the stress and lonliness of self isolation.

The charity say the majority of people in their care have had their daily routines disrupted and rely on their staff to make phone calls for them.

Speaking to RedFM News, Clinical Nurse Manager with the Cope Foundation Avril Keating says the residents are her second family and stressed the importance of using technology during the current restrictions.

"I'm m missing my nephews, I'm missing their hugs, I'm really scared that they're going to forget me at the end of all of this.

"I miss my parents, how I'd love to use sit down at the kitchen table and have a coffee and a chat with them.

"I'm lucky that I'm able to do it over WhatsApp or Skype, and I still get to see them - it's not the same, but at least I get to see them, and I'm keeping everybody safe."
