Cork Penny Dinners say they have seen a huge increase in the number of people seeking help to feed themselves and their families.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been laid off in Ireland by their employers in recent weeks as global commerce grinds to a halt due efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19.
Sanitise Ireland recently carried out a full deep clean at Penny Dinners to reduce the risk of volunteers and service users contracting the virus and say they will continue to clean the kitchen and dining room unitl the crisis is over.
Speaking to RedFM News, Catriona Twomey from Cork Penny Dinners says demand for help has increased four-fold.
"We believe that the increase is because of the temporary closures, and people are afraid of the unknown - they don't know what's to come.
"They're trying to budget and trying to make their money last.
"We believe that's the reason for the increase - that genuinely people are without the finances at the minute."
