Covid 19 testing could be scaled back under plans being considered by NPHET.
Children under 13 and vaccinated people with mild symptoms may not be sent for a test according to the Irish Times.
The more selective testing would mean it would only happen if a health professional thinks it’s necessary.
Professor Sam McConkey from the Royal College of Surgeons says the current regime is medicalising daily life.
"I cherish now that Martin Cormican is thinking aloud if you'd like for NPHET about diverse ways about how we can evolve and make things better.
"This is a time now of transition, about moving into a new relationship with SARS-2/Covid-19 and they're exploring one way of doing that."
