People are 'crying out' for schools or some activities to open up for children, according to the Children's Rights Alliance.

The Education Minister Joe McHugh is under pressure from opposition parties to clarify when schools will reopen.

Sinn Fein believes the Department has 'taken its eye off the ball' as it tries to find a solution as to how and when schools will be back up and running.

CEO of the Children's Rights Alliance Tanya Ward says ultimately it's the students that are missing out.

"if you was ask a child or a young person about what they miss most about school or what they love about school they'll say friends and play, and children learn through friends and play.

"Online learning isn't going to help them, I have children myself of primary school age and I've really noticed that when we've tried the Facetimes or the Zooms, it's just not the same.

"They don't interact in the same way as adults or older teenagers."
