An EU commissioner believes Europe will have herd immunity against Covid 19 by July.
Thierry Breton believes the bloc is in the home stretch because of vaccination.
However, it comes as 769 new cases were confirmed here last night, which is the highest number since the end of February.
Dr. Clíona Ní Cheallaigh, an infectious diseases specialist at St James's Hospital in Dublin, says it matches what they’re seeing on the ground.
"We were hoping that we'd see the rapid reduction of cases that we saw in the spring and the autumn with lockdown, and that we'd be able to shut all our covid wards and get back to life as normal.
"That hasn't happened. We're still seeing a steady trickle of new cases, we're still seeing a lot of people who are very sick, even young people inter 30s and 40s."
