Everyone has been asked to stay at home in their homes for a two week period from midnight

In an address to the nation Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says exceptions will be made for those working in health or social care and other essential services.

Key points from Leo Varadkar's speech:

  • Leo Varadkar says from midnight tonight until Easter Sunday everyone must stay at home unless attending essential work, shopping or farming purposes
  • All public and private gatherings are prohibited
  • No travel outside of a 2km radius of your home
  • People will be allowed to shop for food, household goods and health products.
  • Travel to islands will be limited to residents of the islands only
  • Further non-essential services will be closed
  • Cocooning - People over 70 who are high risk should stay at home and put in place arrangements for people to check on them and make sure they have food and medicine
  • Brief physical exercise within 2km of your house
  • The Taoiseach also confirmed that a healthcare worker is one of the 22 fatalities.
  • Taoiseach asks every man, woman and child to make these sacrifices not out of self interest but for love of each other
