A group of experts are calling on the government to issue clearer guidance and advice on wearing facemasks.
More than 1,000 Irish scientists and doctors have warned that the country must completely eliminate Covid 19 before a return to normal life, with total suppression of the virus.
The widespread wearing of masks, faster testing and contact tracing, the testing of visitors at airport, and a review the lockdown are all included to 'crush the curve'.
One of those who signed the letter, DCU Professor Anthony Staines, says the government needs to send out a message.
"I think they need stronger, clearer advice.
"There are people who can't wear masks for a variety of different reasons, making it [wearing masks] mandatory will lead to a range of challenges and problems.
"I would love to see TD's wearing masks in the Dáil, I would love to see Tony Holohan and his colleagues wearing masks at their press conferences, because that's sending out a message to everybody that it's the right thing to do."
