Former Lord Mayor of Cork calls on Government to extend supports to councils as City Hall faces €9.4 million budget deficit

A former Lord Mayor of the City is calling on the Government to extend more supports to councils after it emerged City Hall is facing a €9.4 million budget deficit due to the pandemic.

Cllr Terry Shannon says the loss, which stems from a loss of car parking fees as well as licensing of street furniture and fees for planning applications, will lead to the cancellation of a number of sporting and arts projects as well as hitting community centres and groups.

The government has committed €6.5 billion to help businesses to reopen, including €260 million to refund councils for the loss of commercial rates for three months.
