Government officials have said new legislation to reintroduce mandatory mask wearing is purely precautionary.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly will draft up laws to allow the Government to impose mask wearing in certain settings if needed.
There is no plans to bring back a mask mandate immediately.
However Ministers want the law in place if it's needed this winter.
