Health officials may have to revisit guidance for children returning to school who are deemed close contacts, according to a GP.
Up to 12,000 children are restricting their movements due to being a close contact of someone with Covid-19.
Monaghan GP Dr Illona Duffy says while the increase in cases was expected, it may pose a challenge for parents as offices and workplaces reopen in the coming months.
"At the moment we're going to have to continue as we are, but NPHET and Government are going to have to look at the public health guidance.
"This is going to keep on going. While your child might be out now and not get the virus and not test positive, what happens in two weeks time when they're re-exposed - they'll be back out again."
