The figures are based on calculations from the European Commission, which looked at vaccine take-up in various countries.
It also looked at their effectiveness in preventing serious illness as a way of estimating the number of lives saved.
HSE Chief Clinical Officer is Colm Henry:
"Some data coming out from the Euro surveillance EU shows the vaccine saved nearly 9,000 of lives aged 60 and older in Ireland and Ireland, of course, has the highest vaccination rate. Yes, immunity wanes. Yes, a booster campaign is necessary. That doesn't mean that it didn't work. That does not mean it didn't save lives."
