The Irish Council for General Practitioners is calling on the public to use face coverings in retail settings and on public transport.
Earlier this month, the World Health Organisation said people should get into the habit of wearing face coverings, even if it's not mandatory to do so - like in Ireland.
The ICGP is also calling on people to call their GP as soon as they feel unwell and to attend a doctor - even if they aren't registered with one.
Dr Nuala O'Connor, who's the IGCP's lead advisor on Covid-19, said the two metre distance rule is harder to maintain in more closed settings.
"While full scientific evidence is not yet available on the effectiveness of face coverings, they are another barrier against transmission of the virus.
"We do know there are certain settings, particularly public transport, or now that there's a lot more people going into shops and retail settings it is more difficult to maintain that two metre distancing."
