The Irish College of General Practitioners says any widening of the testing criteria for Covid-19 will create extra pressure on GPs.
It's welcoming the ramping up of tests per week towards 100,000 but says the capacity must be in the system to manage it.
It says if the capacity isn't there, the return of test results builds up and they won't able to deliver the amount of testing that's needed.
Dr Nuala O'Connor, from the ICGP, says the most important step is more contact tracing.
"This needs to be highly and appropriately organised in order to deal with any rise in new cases, and to be able to isolate and contact trace the context of the cases.
"That's the only way we're going to prevent a resurgence of Covid-19 in the community when we relax the restrictions."
