An immunology expert says vaccines are the best hope we have to stop the spread of the delta variant, not just in adults but in children.

It comes as students return to the classroom in full this week, with the Chief Medical Officer advising parents not to send children to school if they have any symptoms of the virus.

Professor Kingston Mills of Trinity College Dublin says its likely there will be covid cases in schools, with about a third of cases in those under 18.

He says while covid is not a serious disease for children, it's still important those eligible get the vaccine.

"It's very important that children get vaccinated against the Delta variant, and the vaccines work pretty well against the delta variant but they work particularly well in younger people, particularly children.

"Vaccines are the best hope we have of preventing the spread of the delta variant, not only in adults but also in children."
