The Irish Blood Transfusion Services say they need to collect 3,000 units of blood every week to maintain the national blood supply.

It comes as the service is struggling to keep fresh blood stocks and has already turned to the NHS Blood and Transplant service three times in recent weeks for blood

Donors are being asked to support clinics in their areas as the rise in Covid 19 cases is having an impact on blood donations across Cork

Speaking to RedFM News Donor Services Manager with the IBTS in Cork Maureen Gill says at the moment they are struggling to keep the blood numbers up and are particularly short on the negative blood group.

"Hospitals will always need safe blood for a number of procedures or accidents. And at the moment, we are struggling to keep those numbers at a safe level all blood is important at the moment we are particularly short on the negative blood groups. So that's O Negative, A Negative, B Negative, but we would encourage any blood donor to still attend your clinic."
