The Irish Farmers Association says it supports the decision to close hundreds of marts across the country today.
ICOS, which represent co-ops running marts, says the 'blanket closure' is disappointing.
But IFA president Tim Cullinan says the government's decision is understandable.
"It's another blow to the farming community at this point in time.
"But on the other hand if this is going to help with fighting the virus we have to support it.
"We have to support any measure the government and the HSE is coming out with.
"But it is a blow for the farming community, and the marts themselves."
