It could take up to three years before the pub trade gets back to pre-pandemic levels.
That's according to Michael Farrell owner of Farrell's Summerfield Bar in Youghal who was speaking after the VFI revealed that 37 pubs in Cork have remained closed since the start of the pandemic.
Publicans say they are frustrated not knowing what's going to happen on October 22nd but have had to forward plan and order stock, hire staff and organise live entertainment.
Some pubs across Cork are operating with 30% capacity with some larger venues having 50% of their normal amount of customers.
Speaking to RedFM News Michael Farrell of Farrell's Summerfield Bar, Youghal says while the trade is coming back it will take time and there will be pub closures in the meantime.
"The trade is bouncing back, and going on what's happening in the UK which is ahead of us it is bouncing back, but I don't think it's going to get back to pre-pandemic levels for 2-3 years.
"A lot of people cannot wait that long to sustain that."
