The five-day moving average of new Covid-19 cases has dropped by 12% in the past week.

It's now back to levels seen at the end of last month, while just 104 patients were in hospitals with the disease last night - the lowest since September.

The Department of Health confirmed 381 new cases of the disease last night including 13 in Cork, and no further deaths.

UCC virus expert, Professor Gerry Killeen, says the numbers are stable but people still need to be cautious.

"It's certainly better than I expected, and I'm thrilled to be wrong about that.

"Luck has been with us so far. 400-odd cases though is still not a great place to be.

"It also leaves us in a very vulnerable position - so I'd just really appeal to everybody to be a little bit patient. The more patient and restrained we are in the next month or two the sooner we'll be out of this."
