Meat factory workers are to be offered temporary accommodation to try to stop the spread of Covid-19.

So far, there have been at least 860 cases of the virus in clusters at processing plants, which public health officials say is a continuing cause for concern.

Dr Colm Henry, HSE chief clinical officer, says employees could be given alternative housing.

"It's as likely if not more likely that some of the workers may have required or may transmit the virus where they live, other than the workplace.

"And part of the whole menu of public health actions which follow which include identifying, isolating, contact tracing and so on, will be offering alternative accommodation to people who they believe are either at risk of contracting the virus or passing it on."
