A Cork TD says tenants in rent arrears could face being evicted from their homes if they build up rent arrears.

Solidarity's Mick Barry was speaking after his motion to extend a rent freeze and eviction ban from three months to 12 was narrowly defeated by 25 votes to 23.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the government had investigated the possibility of extending the measures to protect tenant, however he said similar measures had backfired in places like San Francisco and had led to landlords selling their properties.

Speaking to RedFM News, Solidarity TD Mick Barry says more needs to be done to protect renters.

"The danger here is that rent arrears can build up during the crisis, and there could be an avalanche of evictions after the three months are up.

"I welcome the rent freeze, I welcome the eviction ban, but I plan to keep campaigning on this issue."
