The next number of days are vital on determining if the country can move into the next phase of lifting restrictions, according to the chief medical officer.

The country is to move into phase two of exiting lockdown on Monday with more retail shops reopening and the 5 kilometre limit extended to 20.

Last night saw the lowest daily increase since March 11th, with 10 new confirmed cases.

But CMO Tony Holohan says it's important cases remain low this week.

"We think we're in a good position, but we can't make any conclusion on that until we get towards the end of the week.

"So we have a number of days to run before we think we're able to say we've reached the conditions.

"This week will be important, if we're likely to see a spread of infection beyond the level that we think is appropriate for us to move on - it's really in the third week that would emerge, and we're only at the start of the third week."
