NPHET has advised an effective grounding of children for two weeks, amid increased spread of the virus in 5 to 11 year olds.
It's recommended under 12s don't attend indoor social events like sleepovers, nativity plays, playdates or communions.
While those aged 9 and above will now have to wear masks in shops, schools and on public transport.
Irish Times columnist and mother of seven Jen Hogan says that will be difficult:
"They've moved to putting masks on nine year olds, or they're recommending masks for nine year olds, and there will be consequences for children who are going to have to wear a mask all day. It's going to be very difficult for them. We do have to look at the bigger picture: the social and emotional fallout, the developmental fallout, the difficulty that will be involved in asking a child, nine plus, to wear a mask for the entire day."
