Public health officials have also suggested reintroducing a cap on the number of households that are allowed to meet.
It comes as 4,163 cases were confirmed yesterday, while 545 people are in hospital with the virus including 117 in ICU.
Professor of Immunology at NUI Maynooth Paul Moynagh says the proposed measures are "random" and "arbitrary":
"If mistakes have been made, learn from them. Whereas at the moment, it seems to me that mistakes are made so then that narrative is defended. And again, we end up now with new restrictions that I'm not convinced are going to be very impactful, but we know that they're going to be highly impactful in terms of those sectors, for example."
