Plans for an updated Covid-19 booster programme are set to be announced this week.
It's expected to include people over the age of 40 but it's unclear at this stage if younger groups will be involved.
Professor Liam Fanning believes it's vital the booster jabs are given to as many people as possible.
"It's really important, there's an urgent need to have everybody that can be boosted, boosted.
"We know that boosting gives people a 75% protection against Omicron, with the limited amount of data that we have.
"A three dose Pfizer vaccine gives excellent protection against symptomatic infections."
