The President has laid a wreath for all workers who have died in the Covid-19 pandemic.

Michael D. Higgins paid tribute to those who have lost their lives to mark International Workers' Memorial Day.

A wreath was laid at the "Plough and the Stars" memorial in the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin.

President Higgins says healthcare workers in particular should be remembered for the sacrifices they are making to protect others from covid-19.

"Our heart goes out to their loved ones.

"We have seen, and continue to benefit from, a dedication to public service and public safety, and a selfless response to the needs of others, to those who have been and are prepared to put their own health at risk for the health and safety of all."
