Some Catholic parishioners have been described as 'selfish' for putting pressure on priests to celebrate private masses.

The Bishop of Elphin, Kevin Doran, says a small minority have been asking priests to say Mass, and has appealed to people to follow the restrictions in place.

While funeral arrangements have also been impacted by the restrictions, with funeral home gatherings discouraged.

Fr Paddy Byrne is a priest based in Abbeyleix and Raheen in Co Laois - he says technology is helping him connect with people.

"physically our churches aren't open for business.

"So I've been using Facebook and Twitter. I've been ministering over the phone - where people simply turn up their phone and I pray with them.

"In their anxiety many people find that the spirit of hope and those messages of encountering hope are really important."
