Pub representatives are meeting with government officials this week to discuss opening earlier then the proposed date.

They're not due to reopen until August 10th, but this may be brought forward to the end of June.

Pubs are proposing to enforce strict social distancing rules so they can reopen at the same time as restaurants and cafes.

CEO of the Licensed Vintners Association Donal O'Keefe says their proposals will fundamentally change how pubs operate.

"We've had some feedback from government which suggests that they're open to meeting us, the date remains to be confirmed but we look forward to meeting them.

"The difficulties of our proposals are around how social distancing will work in pubs.

"Clearly it has an enormous impact on the normal operation of bars.

"Our proposals are radical, they will fundamentally change how we operate."
