The Public Expenditure Minister says the death of a 14 year old is a harrowing reminder of how deadly Covid can be.
Michael McGrath was speaking in Cork today after it was announced that a teenager has become the youngest person in the country to die from Covid-19.
NPHET have raised concern about the recent spike in cases and are asking people to cut their social contacts and work from home where possible.
The government are due to make an announcement on NPHET's recommendations on Tuesday.
Speaking to RedFM News, Minister Michael McGrath says his thoughts are with the teenager's family:
"It's a terrible human tragedy and we all convey our deepest condolences to the family and we don't know the specific circumstances. A life as a child to COVID-19 is a harrowing reminder to all of us that this is a deadly disease. No one is invincible, and even being vaccinated affords a high degree of protection but we all still need to be careful."
