The public is being urged to use trusted sources when seeking information on coronavirus.

It's after a message purporting to be from a Cork Infectious Diseases consultant was circulated on WhatsApp and other social media platforms yesterday.

The Infectious Diseases Society of Ireland have confirmed the entire message is fake and are asking people to ignore and delete the message.

Technology correspondent Jess Kelly says we need to stop and think about what's being spread through WhatsApp:

"It's very useful when it's used properly, but it's an absolute nightmare when it's misused and abused.

"What we've seen particularly over the last three or four days is an incredible amount of not only misinformation, but pure fantasy being shared and being presented as fact, which is only going to scare people who are already pretty freaked out about what's going on at the moment."
