Cases of Covid-19 among 5 to 12 year olds dropped by 15 per cent last week.
Professor Philip Nolan, from NPHET, says there were only 1,866 last week - compared to 2,207 the previous week.
He says they're approaching the level before schools reopened - even though testing has increased three-fold since mid-August.
But Trinity College neuroscientist, Tomás Ryan, says caution is still needed.
"Covid-19 cases amongst children in Ireland are clearly at their highest point in the pandemic so far.
"It's far too early to say whether there is a significant or continuing decreases in cases of Covid amongst children, and for that reason it's essential that we keep testing and tracing contacts of children who were exposed to Covid in classrooms."
