Reports suggest lockdown to be extended with minimal lifting of measures

Health officials are meeting to discuss if any Covid 19 restrictions can be eased in a week’s time.

There are reports the lockdown could be extended with a minimum lifting of the measures.

People over 70 could be allowed out to exercise, the 2km limit may be extended to 5 and DIY stores could open with social distancing in place.

There are now over 19,600 confirmed cases of the virus and 1,102 people have lost their lives.

Consultant at the Mercy University Hospital Dr Chris Luke says we have to be careful of a second waves.

"The Spanish Flu was said to have killed a couple of million of people in its first wave.

"But in its second wave it killed tens of millions of people.

"So I am particularly anxious about the second wave.

"I think our first surge might still yet in the nursing homes, and my great concern is if they crumble the disease will spread into the hospital sector."
