Indoor dining will be allowed - however with extra measures and only pubs with a kitchen on-site can welcome back customers.

People are being advised to pre-book a table for a meal.

Restaurants Association of Ireland Chief Executive Adrian Cummins says the setting is safe:

"we're extremely pleased the government has given us the green light to reopen today: restaurants, gastrobars across the country. We want to provide a safe, secure, regulated environment for people to dine out in, to socialise in December. This is about protecting our customers, protecting our staff and doing the right thing for the country."

Meanwhile publicans say it's a 'bittersweet' day as gastropubs with a kitchen can reopen from today.

The so-called 'wet pubs' won't be allowed to open over the Christmas period, however there will be additional business supports available to make up for the loss of customers.

Chief Executive of the Vintners Federation is Padraig Cribbens, he says those who aren't allowed to reopen feel they can't be trusted:

"I suppose it is a bittersweet day because for every one that is opened, there is one that has been told by Micheál Martin, by Leo Varadkar and by Eamon Ryan that they, their 25,000 staff and the communities that they serve are not to be trusted to take personal responsibility to allow opening in a safe manner."
