There’s been a sharp increase in Covid 19 cases in nursing homes.

The Department of Health revealed last night there are 1,944 cases in nursing homes compared with just over 1,204 on Monday.

That’s a jump of 61 percent.

There are now 16,671 cases of coronavirus nationwide and 769 people have lost their lives.

Dr Siobhan Kennelly from the HSE says they’re working hard to improve the situation in nursing homes.

"Everybody across the sector is working very hard to try and improve the resilience of these facilities and nursing homes when they're coping with outbreaks.

"It's clearly very psychologically difficult as well for many of the staff, the residents and their families."
